Tesla candidates in 2025 describe short loops run by the hiring team: a recruiter call or AI screen, one or two technical interviews, and sometimes a hiring manager round. What they were asked depended on the team. An Energy team intern debugged embedded C after a system design question, a Fremont frontend intern built a React autocomplete and solved a binary search problem, a Palo Alto intern designed an API to store metrics, and a US engineer had a code cleanup and a LeetCode problem. Each loop included a detailed resume walkthrough.
Three of the six 2025 reports below ended in offers, all for internships. The two full-time software engineer candidates and one intern did not get offers.
Tesla interview process round by round
| Round | Duration | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter call or AI screen | Up to ~1 hour for the AI screen | Why Tesla, why leaving, role fit |
| Technical interview 1 | Not stated | Resume walkthrough plus design or coding |
| Technical interview 2 | Not stated | Team-specific coding or a LeetCode problem |
| Hiring manager | Not stated | Behavioral questions and resume detail |
Tesla interview process in 2025: reports by role
These come from self-reported write-ups on Taro (jointaro.com) unless noted. Each is one candidate’s account.
- Software integration engineer intern, Energy team, US (November 2025, offer). Two back-to-back rounds. A staff engineer walked through the resume in depth, asked a system design question based on a past team project, and probed past experience. A second engineer from the team reviewed skills fit and asked the candidate to debug an embedded C program.
- Software engineer intern, frontend, Fremont (March 2025, offer). One round the candidate called very team dependent: build a React app that calls an API with an autocomplete list, discuss debounce and other optimizations, then a LeetCode medium binary search problem and resume questions.
- Software engineer intern, Palo Alto (April 2025, offer). Two onsite rounds: a technical interview to design an API to store metrics with sample data, then a hiring manager round of behavioral questions and a resume walkthrough.
- Software engineer, US (October 2025, no offer). A recruiter call (why are you looking for a new role, why Tesla), then a live coding session with a practical code-cleanup task and one standard LeetCode-style problem.
- Software engineer, Palo Alto (May 2025, no offer). A call to schedule a first technical interview the following week. The interview covered introductions, past experience, and hardware questions on power systems and LabVIEW.
- Software engineer intern, San Mateo (August 2025, no offer). “Tell me about yourself,” then a LeetCode medium to hard problem. The candidate said the interviewer seemed disinterested and gave no guidance.
- AI interview (Glassdoor, January 2026). A recruiter asked the candidate to complete an AI interview on Ribbon AI. It lasted about an hour and went through the steps of a normal interview.
Detailed interview experiences
Experience 1: Software integration engineer intern, Energy team (November 2025, offer)
Round 1, staff engineer: A detailed resume walkthrough, then a system design question about a project the team had worked on, then follow-ups on past experience.
Round 2, team engineer: Skills fit for the role, then a coding task: debug an embedded C program.
Result: Offer, accepted.
Takeaways
- What decided it: Being ready for the team’s actual stack (C on embedded systems) and explaining past work in depth.
- How to practice: Read the posting for the stack, then debug a small C program with an interrupt handler and a shared buffer.
Experience 2: Frontend intern, Fremont (March 2025, offer)
Round: Build a React app that calls an API and shows an autocomplete list; talk through debounce and other optimizations; solve a LeetCode medium binary search problem; answer resume questions.
Result: Offer.
Takeaways
- What decided it: Shipping a working UI quickly and knowing why debounce matters for an API-backed input.
- How to practice: Build an autocomplete from scratch in 30 minutes with request cancellation and caching.
Experience 3: Software engineer intern, Palo Alto (April 2025, offer)
Round 1, technical (onsite): Design an API to store metrics, using example data the interviewer provided.
Round 2, hiring manager (onsite): Behavioral questions and a resume walkthrough.
Result: Offer, accepted.
Takeaway: Practice API design with real sample data: define the payload, the storage layout and the query endpoint, then handle bad data.
Experience 4: Software engineer, US (October 2025, no offer)
Recruiter call: Why are you looking for a new role, why Tesla.
Live coding: A practical code-cleanup task plus one standard LeetCode-style problem.
Result: No offer, positive experience.
Takeaway: Refactoring under observation is a skill on its own. Write tests that pin the old behavior before changing anything.
Experience 5: Software engineer intern, San Mateo (August 2025, no offer)
Interview: Tell me about yourself, then a LeetCode medium to hard problem. The interviewer watched without guiding.
Result: No offer, negative experience.
Takeaway: Talk through your plan before coding even when the interviewer is silent, and state your complexity at the end.
Tesla interview questions that come up often
Coding
- Debug an embedded C program
- Build a React autocomplete that calls an API, with debounce
- A LeetCode medium binary search problem
- A code-cleanup task plus a LeetCode problem
Design
- Design an API to store metrics
- A system design question based on a project the team built
Behavioral
- Why Tesla?
- Why are you looking for a new role?
- Tell me about yourself, then a detailed resume walkthrough
Tesla interview tips from these candidates
- Prepare for the team, not for Tesla in general. The same title brought embedded C, React or API design depending on the team.
- Know every line of your resume. Three of the six loops spent real time on it.
- Practice LeetCode mediums anyway; three of the six loops included a LeetCode-style problem.
- For an AI screen, keep answers short and specific.
Tesla behavioral round in these reports
Behavioral questions showed up in the recruiter call, inside technical rounds as a resume walkthrough, and in a hiring manager round for the Palo Alto intern. Sample answers to why Tesla, setbacks and resume walkthroughs are on the Tesla behavioral interview questions page, and round-by-round prep is on the Tesla interview questions hub.
Sample answers for high-frequency questions
Q. Debug an embedded C program.
A. Reproduce the symptom, then check uninitialized variables, array bounds, integer overflow in timer math, and variables shared with an interrupt handler that are missing volatile or read without disabling interrupts. Use UART prints or breakpoints, change one thing at a time, and explain why the fix works.
Q. Build a React autocomplete with debounce.
A. Debounce the input by about 300 ms, fetch only when the debounced value changes, cancel stale requests with AbortController, cache results per query, and support arrow keys, Enter and Escape in the list.
Q. Design an API to store metrics.
A. POST batches of name, tags, timestamp and value; validate and write to a time-series store partitioned by metric and time; GET with filters, time range, step and aggregation; downsample old data and make batches idempotent.
