Optum Interview Questions
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Optum is UnitedHealth Group’s technology and analytics arm, and its fresher process is a fairly standard OA-GD-Tech-HR loop with one recurring theme: how you’d handle sensitive healthcare data responsibly.
Optum interview process at a glance
Section titled “Optum interview process at a glance”| Round | Duration | What they test |
|---|---|---|
| Online Assessment | 60-90 min | Verbal/logical/abstract reasoning + DBMS/OOPS/SQL MCQs + 1-2 coding questions |
| Group Discussion (some drives) | 15-20 min | Communication, teamwork, topic articulation |
| Technical Interview | 45-60 min | DSA, OS/DBMS fundamentals, project deep-dive |
| HR Interview | 20-30 min | Cultural fit, “Why Optum”, explaining projects in plain language |
Online Assessment
Section titled “Online Assessment”Hosted on Mercer Mettl or HackerRank, with around 50 questions across roughly 60-90 minutes: verbal, logical, and abstract reasoning, MCQs on DBMS/OOPS/SQL, and 1-2 coding problems (sometimes including a DBMS query question rather than pure DSA).
Common questions
- Verbal, logical, and abstract reasoning MCQs
- DBMS, OOPS, and SQL concept MCQs
- 1-2 coding problems - array/string manipulation or a SQL query problem
- OS fundamentals MCQs
Group Discussion (some campus drives)
Section titled “Group Discussion (some campus drives)”Not run in every drive, but where present, a 15-20 minute discussion on a general or healthcare-adjacent topic, evaluating communication and how you build on others’ points rather than just talking the most.
Common questions
- General current-affairs or technology-adjacent GD topics
- Occasionally a healthcare-technology-adjacent topic given Optum’s domain
- Evaluated on articulation, listening, and constructive participation
Technical Interview
Section titled “Technical Interview”A 45-60 minute round, often conducted over MS Teams or HirePro, covering DSA, OS/DBMS fundamentals, and a deep walkthrough of your resume projects. Candidate accounts suggest this round doesn’t always function as a hard pass/fail gate on its own - communication and overall impression across the loop matter too.
Common questions
- Medium-level DSA problems - arrays, strings, linked lists
- OS concepts - process scheduling, memory management
- DBMS - normalization, SQL joins, transactions
- Deep dive into a resume project - your specific role and technical decisions
- Explain your project in simple, non-technical language, as if to a non-engineer
Round-by-round accounts, including how the technical round played out for real candidates, are on the Optum interview experience page.
HR Interview
Section titled “HR Interview”A closing 20-30 minute round on cultural fit, motivation, and how you think about working with sensitive data.
Common questions
- Tell me about yourself and why Optum, and why healthcare technology?
- Optum works with sensitive patient health data at scale - how would you approach a situation where a project required handling confidential information responsibly?
- Explain one of your projects the way you’d explain it to someone with no technical background
- Are you comfortable relocating to Hyderabad, Noida, or Bengaluru?
Sample answer frameworks for each of these are on the Optum HR interview questions page.
The healthcare-data angle
Section titled “The healthcare-data angle”Because Optum is UnitedHealth Group’s technology arm, its interviewers weave data-responsibility questions into both the technical and HR rounds more consistently than most other tech employers - not as a formality, but because the products you’d build touch real patient health information. Prepare a genuine, thought-through answer on data privacy and responsible handling, distinct from a generic “I follow best practices” line - it’s one of the more predictable follow-ups across Optum’s loop.
Frequently asked questions about Optum interviews
Section titled “Frequently asked questions about Optum interviews”What is the Optum interview process for freshers?
Optum (UnitedHealth Group’s technology arm) typically runs 3-4 rounds: 1. An Online Assessment (60-90 minutes) on Mercer Mettl or HackerRank - verbal/logical/abstract reasoning MCQs plus 1-2 coding questions and DBMS/OOPS/SQL MCQs. 2. A Group Discussion in some campus drives (15-20 minutes) on a general or healthcare-adjacent topic. 3. A Technical Interview (45-60 minutes), often over MS Teams or HirePro, covering DSA, OS/DBMS fundamentals, and your resume projects. 4. An HR round (20-30 minutes) on cultural fit. Total timeline: 2-4 weeks.
What is the Optum online assessment like?
The OA is usually hosted on Mercer Mettl or HackerRank with around 50 questions in ~60-90 minutes: verbal, logical and abstract reasoning, plus MCQs on DBMS, OOPS and SQL, and 1-2 coding problems (sometimes including DBMS queries). Technical MCQs on OS and core CS fundamentals also show up.
How many rounds are there in the Optum interview?
Most freshers go through 3-4 rounds: Online Assessment, an optional Group Discussion, a Technical Interview, and an HR round. Some off-campus drives skip the GD entirely.
Is Optum’s technical bar high, or does a broad shortlist reach HR?
It varies by drive. At least one public on-campus account describes a fairly broad shortlist reaching the HR round even after a technical interview the candidate themselves felt went poorly - suggesting Optum’s technical round isn’t always a hard cutoff on its own, and overall fit/communication across the whole loop matters. Don’t read one report as universal, but don’t assume every technical stumble is instantly disqualifying either.
How should I prepare for Optum interviews?
Practice medium-level DSA (LeetCode-style), revise OS/DBMS/SQL fundamentals, and be ready to explain your projects in simple, non-technical language since Optum values communicating clearly about data. Since Optum works on healthcare data for UnitedHealth Group, think through how you’d talk about handling sensitive or confidential information responsibly - it’s a natural follow-up in the technical or HR round.
