The Johnson & Johnson interview process usually starts with a HireVue on-demand video: three or four general questions such as why J&J, why this role and why you are qualified, with about 2-3 minutes per answer and two attempts each. If you pass, you get live video interviews of 30-60 minutes with a recruiter and the hiring manager, and for many roles a team panel. Questions are behavioral, in STAR form, plus technical questions for engineering, science and tech roles.
J&J’s careers site says all interviews are currently conducted digitally. Some candidates also mention the company’s Credo, the 1943 statement that puts patients, doctors and nurses first, coming up in later rounds.

Johnson & Johnson interview questions with answers
Q: Why Johnson & Johnson?
Name the business you applied to (Innovative Medicine or MedTech) and one product or therapy area you know something about, then tie it to the Credo’s first line about patients, doctors and nurses. For an engineering co-op, mention the product platform in the posting; the Raritan GTO co-op, for example, supports wound closure and biosurgery products. Finish with what you want to learn in the role.
Q: Why are you qualified for this position?
Match two or three requirements from the posting to evidence: a course project, an internship task, a tool you used. Give a number for each. Keep it under two minutes for the HireVue version.
Q: Tell me about a time you were challenged.
Pick a task where you lacked a skill or information, explain how you closed the gap, and give the result. Engineering candidates can use a lab or design project where a test failed and they found the cause.
Q: Tell me about a time you put the patient or customer first.
Use STAR and make the trade-off explicit: what would have been faster or cheaper, and why you chose the option that served the end user. The Credo lists patients, doctors and nurses as J&J’s first responsibility, so a story about quality or safety over speed fits well.
Johnson & Johnson interview questions by role

| Tech Compliance Lead | On-demand interview, hiring manager, team panel; technical questions, behavioral questions and the Credo |
| Financial Analyst (New York) | Conversational interview on the role and the company |
J&J HireVue interview
J&J’s hiring page describes the pre-recorded interview this way: you answer questions J&J sends, can review and re-record twice before submitting, and the whole thing is usually about 10 minutes. Glassdoor candidates name the platform as HireVue.
What 2025-26 candidates reported:
| Detail | Reported |
|---|---|
| Deadline | 4 days from the invite (Summer Internship Program and Oncology Clinical Scientist Intern, October 2026) |
| Length | About 15 minutes; one candidate said 8-18 minutes |
| Questions | 3 or 4; why J&J, why this position, why you are qualified |
| Prep time | 20 seconds per question for one intern; another said prep time was unlimited apart from the overall deadline |
| Answer time | 90-120 seconds, or 2-3 minutes, depending on the question |
| Attempts | 2 per question |
| Glitch warning | A Danvers, MA candidate said leaving the tab open too long submitted a blank video |
Record in a quiet room, look at the camera, and use the second attempt only if the first missed a point.

J&J co-op and internship interviews
J&J posts co-ops and internships under a “Career Programs” function, split into leadership development program (LDP) roles and non-LDP intern and co-op roles. The GTO Engineering Co-op in Raritan, New Jersey, posted October 28, 2026, is typical of the non-LDP side:
- Terms: January to July/August 2027, or May/June to December 2027, fully onsite.
- Eligibility: enrolled at an accredited college, at least one year of undergraduate study complete, minimum 3.0 GPA, legally authorized to work in the US, own transportation.
- Preferred majors: chemical, mechanical, biomedical, industrial, materials and polymer engineering.
- Pay: $23.50-$52.50 per hour, with medical benefits, up to 40 hours of sick time and the company pension plan.
The co-op interview usually runs HireVue first, then one or two live interviews. An engineering intern who accepted an offer in October 2026 had a mix of behavioral and technical questions. Supply Chain Co-Op is the third most common J&J role on Glassdoor’s interview list, after intern and internship.
No recent public report describes the full interview for J&J’s leadership development programs, so that loop is not broken down here.
J&J experienced-hire interviews
Experienced roles skip or add to the HireVue step. An R&D Engineer hired in October 2026 applied on the careers site, completed a Gallup strengths assessment, had 30-minute interviews with the recruiter and hiring manager, and got an offer after about a month. A Tech Compliance Lead candidate had about three rounds including the on-demand interview, a hiring manager interview and a team panel, and was asked about the Credo along with very technical and behavioral questions.
Loops can run long. A Manager, Automation Engineering candidate in Wilson, North Carolina reported more than seven interviews, often at short notice, that were not very technical, and was then told their experience was insufficient.
Our Credo and how it shows up
J&J’s Credo, written in 1943 by Robert Wood Johnson, sets four responsibilities in order: first to the patients, doctors, nurses and others who use its products; then to employees; then to communities and the world; and last to stockholders, who should earn a fair return. J&J’s job postings quote it too: the co-op posting opens with “As guided by Our Credo”.
In interviews it surfaces in two ways. Some interviewers ask directly whether you know it. More often, behavioral questions ask about putting quality, safety or the end user ahead of speed, which is the Credo’s first responsibility in practice. STAR answers for these are on the J&J behavioral interview questions page.
Where J&J candidates lose points
- Generic HireVue answers. The three common prompts (why J&J, why this role, why you) reward specifics from the posting.
- Missing the deadline. Candidates report 4 days to complete the recording.
- Technical gaps left unexplained. The October 2026 engineering intern advised asking clarifying questions instead of guessing.
- No story about quality or the end user. The Credo puts patients first, and some interviewers ask about it directly.
- Assuming the loop is fixed. Manager candidates report extra interviews added at short notice; keep notes after every round.
Who does well in J&J interviews
Good fit: You can explain in two minutes why this specific J&J business and role, and you have STAR stories where quality or the end user won over speed. Candidates who got offers describe friendly, conversational interviewers.
Harder path: You treat the HireVue as a formality. Several intern candidates on Glassdoor in October 2026 reached only the HireVue stage, and its questions are general enough that unspecific answers stand out. Experienced candidates should also be ready for long loops with extra interviews added at short notice.
A two-week J&J prep plan
- Days 1-3: Read the posting and the Credo. Write a 90-second answer to why J&J, why this role and why you are qualified.
- Days 4-6: Record those three answers on your phone with a 2-minute timer, twice each, and fix filler words and missing numbers.
- Days 7-10: Write six STAR stories: a challenge, a failure, a team conflict, putting the end user first, learning something fast, and a technical problem from your field.
- Days 11-14: Do one mock live interview with a friend, including two technical questions from your discipline, and prepare three questions for the hiring manager.
Johnson & Johnson pay in the US
The GTO Engineering Co-op posting (Raritan, NJ, requisition R-095955) lists $23.50-$52.50 per hour, based on program year, discipline, degree and experience. Co-ops and interns can join company medical benefits, get up to 40 hours of sick time per calendar year (56 in Washington State) and join the consolidated retirement plan (pension). The posting says the role is not eligible for severance.
Frequently asked questions about J&J interviews
What is the Johnson & Johnson interview process?
J&J’s careers site lists apply, interview and offer, and says interviews are currently digital in one of two formats: a pre-recorded interview of about 10 minutes, where you can review and re-record answers twice, or a live video interview of 30 minutes to an hour. Candidates report a HireVue recording first for interns, co-ops and many entry roles, then recruiter, hiring manager and sometimes panel interviews. Glassdoor averages 32 days.
What questions are on the J&J HireVue interview?
Usually three or four general questions. A candidate who interviewed in December 2025 had three: why Johnson & Johnson, why this position, and why you are qualified, with 2-3 minutes per answer. Another October 2026 intern candidate had 20 seconds to think and 90-120 seconds to respond per question.
How long do I have to complete the J&J HireVue?
Candidates report 4 days from the invite. An Oncology Clinical Scientist Intern applicant in New York applied on October 17, 2026, got the invite on October 21, and described the recording as 8-18 minutes long with more than one attempt allowed.
Does J&J ask about the Credo in interviews?
Sometimes. An October 2026 Tech Compliance Lead candidate said interviewers asked about the Credo alongside technical and behavioral questions. The Credo, written in 1943 by Robert Wood Johnson, sets J&J’s responsibilities in order: patients, doctors and nurses first, then employees, communities, and stockholders last.
How much do J&J co-ops get paid?
J&J’s GTO Engineering Co-op posting in Raritan, New Jersey lists $23.50-$52.50 per hour depending on program year, discipline, degree and experience. It requires a minimum 3.0 GPA, completion of at least the first year of an undergraduate program, and authorization to work in the US.
How many interview rounds does J&J have?
Two to four is typical. An October 2026 R&D Engineer hire took a Gallup strengths assessment, then 30-minute interviews with the recruiter and hiring manager. A Tech Compliance Lead candidate had about three rounds including the on-demand interview, a hiring manager interview and a team panel. One Wilson, North Carolina manager candidate reported more than seven interviews.
Can I re-record my J&J video interview answers?
Yes. J&J’s own hiring page says you can review and re-record pre-recorded answers twice before submitting, and October 2026 candidates describe two attempts per question. One Danvers, Massachusetts candidate warned that staying on the tab too long caused a blank video to submit.
Does J&J give technical interviews?
For engineering, science and technology roles, yes, usually mixed with behavioral questions. An October 2026 engineering intern who accepted an offer said the technical questions were a bit surprising and advised asking clarifying questions when unsure. Glassdoor lists Computer Programmer among the hardest J&J interviews.
