The Cloudflare interview process for software engineers is a recruiter conversation, a team panel (a hiring manager call about your resume, a live coding or pair programming interview, then more technical and design interviews with the manager and peers), and executive calls that include the “Orange Cloud Interview” on behaviors, before the offer. Coding is practical rather than puzzle-based: 2025 candidates were asked to design a circular queue with tests, implement an LRU cache, build a task scheduler and scale it, and parse JSON. Teams close to Cloudflare’s network also ask about DNS, TLS and CDN design.
Taro’s self-reported pass rate for US software engineers at Cloudflare was 9% across 46 reports, and several 2025 candidates said the process moved slowly. Cloudflare says it has 3,800+ team members in more than 30 countries.

Cloudflare interview questions with answers
Q: Design a circular queue with enqueue, dequeue, isFull and isEmpty.
Use a fixed array of capacity k, a head index and a count. Enqueue writes at (head + count) mod k and increments count; dequeue reads at head, advances head mod k and decrements count. Keeping a count avoids the classic ambiguity where head equals tail for both full and empty. Test the wraparound: fill, empty, then fill again; enqueue on full and dequeue on empty should return false or raise, as you agreed with the interviewer.
Q: Implement an LRU cache with O(1) get and put.
Combine a hash map from key to node with a doubly linked list ordered by recency. get moves the node to the front; put inserts at the front and, when over capacity, removes the tail node and its map entry. Use sentinel head and tail nodes to avoid null checks. Follow-ups: thread safety with a single lock or lock striping, and TTL-based expiry, which is how an edge cache works in practice.
Q: Write a simple task scheduler, then scale it across machines.
Single node: a min-heap of tasks keyed by next run time and a worker loop that sleeps until the earliest task is due. To scale, store tasks in a shared database, have workers claim due tasks with a lease (a row lock or compare-and-set with an expiry), and renew the lease while running. If a worker disconnects, its lease expires and another worker picks the task up, so tasks must be idempotent. Keep metadata fresh with heartbeats and short leases, and accept that at-least-once execution is the realistic guarantee.
Q: Walk through what happens when a browser requests a site behind Cloudflare.
The browser asks a recursive resolver for the domain. Because the domain uses Cloudflare’s nameservers, the answer is a Cloudflare anycast IP, and BGP routes the user to the nearest data center. There the TLS handshake terminates, Cloudflare applies firewall and bot rules, checks its cache, and if needed fetches from the origin over a separate connection, then returns and possibly caches the response according to cache headers.
Q: Design a high-availability notification system.
Producers write notification requests to a replicated queue. Stateless workers in multiple regions consume, look up user preferences, render the message and send through providers (email, SMS, push) with retries and backoff. Store a delivery record keyed by an idempotency key so retries do not send twice. Use a dead-letter queue for permanent failures, rate-limit per user, and fail over between providers when one is down.

Cloudflare hiring process, step by step
Cloudflare’s careers page lists five steps:
- Initial conversations with a recruiter.
- Team panel interviews with the prospective manager and peers.
- Executive calls, including the “Orange Cloud Interview” focused on behaviors.
- Offer.
- Orientation.
Cloudflare describes three work models: In-Hub (split between home and a local office on a cadence the team sets), Hybrid (a hub a few days a week) and Distributed (anywhere in your country of employment). Intern postings for Austin require 3-5 days a week in the office.
Cloudflare intern and new grad interview
Cloudflare’s Software Engineer Intern (2027) postings for Austin offer a Winter/Spring term (January-May 2027) and a Summer term (May-September 2027), full time for at least 12 weeks, in the office 3-5 days a week, with no remote or part-time option. The posting lists TypeScript and JavaScript, Go, Rust, C and C++, and Python, and says interns ship projects over 12-14 weeks and present them to the whole company. It does not list pay, and Cloudflare hires interns on a rolling basis until roles fill.
A US software engineering intern in November 2025, who applied online and through a university event, had no online assessment. The first round was a 30-minute talk with a hiring manager about their resume plus behavioral questions. About two weeks later came a one-hour pair programming interview focused on backend work: write a simple task scheduler, then discuss how to scale it with distributed systems ideas, how to handle disconnections, and how to keep metadata fresh.
A UK graduate software engineer in May 2025 had some HR rounds and a couple of pair programming sessions on video calls: build a circular buffer, parse JSON in Python, and design communication mechanisms for a CDN.
Cloudflare software engineer interview for experienced hires
Experienced loops start with an engineering manager or a senior engineer. An Austin candidate in September 2025 talked through past projects and Cloudflare’s newer work with a senior engineer, then designed a circular queue with test cases and edge cases, and was asked which project they were most proud of. Another Austin candidate that month had an engineering manager call on their resume and a technical round of LeetCode medium problems, then heard nothing more after being told they would move to the panel.
Cloudflare’s posted ranges for engineers with four or more years of experience are around $150,000-$216,000 base depending on city. A London candidate in January 2025 had an LRU cache coding stage, then a system design stage where they presented a project of their choice and analyzed a high-availability notification system.
Cloudflare pair programming round
Cloudflare’s coding interviews are collaborative. You write working code with an engineer, then extend it. Expect to be asked for tests and edge cases without being prompted, and to explain how the code would behave on a network of more than 330 cities, which is the scale Cloudflare’s postings describe.
Cloudflare system design interview
Design rounds lean toward networked services: a high-availability notification system, communication between CDN nodes, or scaling a scheduler across machines. Cover failure detection, retries, consistency of metadata and what happens when a region is cut off.
Cloudflare networking and DNS questions
Not every team asks these, but teams working on the network do. Be ready to walk through a DNS lookup from stub resolver to authoritative server, explain TTLs and caching, describe a TLS 1.3 handshake, and explain how anycast routes a user to the nearest data center.
Who does well in Cloudflare interviews
Good fit: You can write a correct data structure quickly, test it without prompting, and then talk about running it across many machines. Some knowledge of how the Internet works (DNS, TLS, HTTP caching, BGP at a high level) is a real advantage for network-facing teams.
Harder path: You need a fast decision. Several 2025 candidates described waits of weeks between steps, one principal candidate withdrew over offer deadlines, and one Austin candidate stopped hearing back after being told they would advance.
Cloudflare in India: Bengaluru
Cloudflare has engineering roles in Bengaluru, and candidate reports from there are for experienced software engineers. A September 2025 Bengaluru software engineer report described many deep technical questions on DNS and encryption keys, a rejection right after the hiring manager round, and an unresponsive recruiting team. Prepare networking fundamentals in depth if you apply there.
What Cloudflare interviewers score
- Working code with tests and edge cases. Both Austin and UK reports stress this.
- Scaling a simple solution. The intern task scheduler and the notification design both start small and grow.
- Networking knowledge where the team needs it. DNS and CDN questions appear in some loops.
- Curiosity and transparency. These are two of Cloudflare’s three stated values and shape the Orange Cloud Interview.
A four-week Cloudflare prep plan
- Week 1: Implement a circular queue, circular buffer, LRU cache and rate limiter from scratch, each with tests for edge cases.
- Week 2: Pair-program a small backend service with a friend: a task scheduler, then add leases, retries and heartbeats.
- Week 3: Networking basics: DNS resolution, TLS, HTTP caching, anycast. Do two designs: a notification system and cache invalidation across many data centers.
- Week 4: Behavioral stories for principled, curious and transparent, plus the six capabilities Cloudflare lists, and a mock panel.
Cloudflare pay in the US
Cloudflare’s 2026 Software Engineer, Deploy at Scale posting (Austin, San Francisco, New York City and London; four or more years of experience) lists an estimated base of $157,000-$216,000 for San Francisco and $150,000-$206,000 for New York City, plus equity. A Systems Engineer - Database Platform posting lists $157,000-$196,000 for the Bay Area and $150,000-$187,000 for New York. The 2027 Austin intern postings do not list pay.
Levels.fyi’s self-reported US medians, including stock and bonus, are about $147,000 at L1, $163,000 at L2, $210,000 at L3, $297,000 at L4 and $344,000 at L5.
Frequently asked questions about Cloudflare interviews
What is the Cloudflare interview process?
Cloudflare publishes five steps: initial conversations with a recruiter, team panel interviews with the prospective manager and peers, executive calls that include the “Orange Cloud Interview” on behaviors, the offer, and orientation. For engineers the team panel usually starts with a hiring manager call about your resume, then a live coding or pair programming interview, then more technical and design rounds. Candidates who reach the offer stage may be asked to attend an in-person interview at a Cloudflare office or hub.
What is the Cloudflare Orange Cloud Interview?
It is part of the executive calls stage in Cloudflare’s published hiring process and focuses on behaviors. Cloudflare’s careers page lists its values as principled, curious and transparent, and the behaviors it uses for feedback include being curious, communicating clearly, doing the right thing, embracing diversity, getting work across the finish line and leading with empathy. Prepare stories for each.
Does Cloudflare have an online assessment?
Usually not for engineers. A US software engineering intern in November 2025 reported no OA: a 30-minute hiring manager conversation, then a one-hour pair programming interview about two weeks later. Experienced candidates go from recruiter or hiring manager calls straight to live coding.
What coding questions does Cloudflare ask?
Practical data structures and backend tasks rather than puzzles. 2025 reports include designing a circular queue with test cases and edge cases (Austin), implementing an LRU cache (London), building a circular buffer and parsing JSON in Python (UK graduate), a simple task scheduler that you then scale (US intern), and a coding challenge on processing and interpreting events (principal engineer).
Does Cloudflare ask networking questions in software engineering interviews?
Sometimes, depending on the team. A Bengaluru candidate in 2025 was asked many deep questions on DNS and encryption keys, a US candidate in March 2025 was asked about connecting switches in a screening call, and a UK graduate was asked to design communication mechanisms for a CDN. Know DNS resolution, TLS handshakes, HTTP caching and how a CDN routes requests.
How much does Cloudflare pay software engineers?
Cloudflare’s 2026 Software Engineer, Deploy at Scale posting, which asks for four or more years of experience, lists an estimated base of $157,000-$216,000 for San Francisco and $150,000-$206,000 for New York City, plus equity. Levels.fyi’s self-reported US medians, including stock, are about $147,000 at L1, $163,000 at L2 and $210,000 at L3.
How long does the Cloudflare hiring process take?
Often several weeks to months. A principal engineer candidate in October 2025 dropped out because the process was slow, and another October 2025 candidate said interviews could take months to complete. Tell your recruiter early if you have deadlines from other offers.
