The American Airlines flight attendant interview process has five steps: an online application with eligibility questions and an assessment, a Meet Me self-recorded video with three situational questions, a live virtual 2-on-1 Crew Interview with recruiters, an In-Person Experience at the Dallas-Fort Worth campus with a crew resource management assessment and another 2-on-1, then a training offer. The questions test customer care and safety judgment, most often “why do you want to be a flight attendant” and “name a time you went above and beyond for a customer,” answered in STAR format. Airport customer service agents get a group presentation and a short panel with three behavioral questions; tech roles get technical rounds and a leadership round.
As of October 2026, American’s flight attendant site says applications are closed for now, and candidates picked in the current round will start training in 2027.

American Airlines flight attendant hiring process
American publishes the steps on its flight attendant careers site and FAQ:
- Apply to Fly. Watch the short Before You Board video, submit the application, answer the eligibility questions and complete an online assessment. A July 2026 candidate in Florida described the assessment as a comprehension test plus a personality section, both easy. A 2022 hire called the questionnaire “tricky.”
- Meet Me video. A self-recorded video introduction plus three situational questions, to be completed within 72 hours. An October 2026 Dallas hire reported four situational questions answered in STAR format, with three retakes and two minutes of prep time before recording.
- Crew Interview. A live virtual 2-on-1 with members of the recruiting team. Several 2026 reports describe a group video call with about 30 candidates first, where each person answers one or two questions.
- In-Person Experience. At the Robert L. Crandall Campus in Dallas-Fort Worth, with a crew resource management assessment, interactive group activities and a 2-on-1 interview. American provides flights for candidates outside the area. Reports from 2026 mention groups of about 40 candidates and a full day on campus.
- Training offer. The offer depends on a drug screen, a background check, fingerprinting and verification of two years of employment history.
Glassdoor users rate the flight attendant interview 2.9 out of 5 for difficulty, with 79% positive experiences and an average of 67 days to hire.
Requirements American lists
- A valid passport before training; to interview, the passport must be valid through at least December 31, 2027.
- No fixed height range. You must be able to reach and remove emergency equipment from the overhead bins without help, and have enough head clearance in the cabin.
- No visible tattoos while in uniform, no facial piercings and no more than one earring per earlobe.
- A second language is not required. Language-qualified roles need a proficiency assessment; American lists languages including Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, French, German, Italian and Hindi.
- If you are turned down, you must wait one year from the last communication to reapply.
American Airlines flight attendant interview questions with sample answers
Q: Why do you want to be a flight attendant?
Asked in the 2026 group video round. Tie it to the reality of the job American describes (reserve, nights, holidays): “I have spent four years in hotel front desk work and I like solving problems for people who are tired and stressed. I know the first two years are on reserve and I have planned for that, including living near a base.”
Q: Name a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
Reported by 2026 hires at both the video and in-person stages. Use STAR and pick a story with a clear result: “A guest’s wheelchair-using father was booked into a second-floor room with no elevator access. I found an accessible room at our sister property, arranged the shuttle and called ahead so the room was ready. She wrote to our manager the next day.”
Q: Describe a time you dealt with a difficult customer.
An August 2026 Dallas hire was asked this. Show that you stayed calm, listened and followed policy: “A diner shouted about a 40-minute wait. I apologized, explained the kitchen backup honestly, offered a drink while he waited and checked back every 10 minutes. He stayed and tipped well.”
Q: Tell us about a time safety came first.
A May 2026 Dallas hire said questions covered customer service and safety experiences. Give a story where you stopped something unsafe even though it slowed work down, such as closing a wet floor area during a rush or refusing to serve an intoxicated guest.
Q: Tell us about yourself.
Keep it under a minute: current job, years of customer-facing work, one thing that shows reliability, and why now. A 2022 hire said smiling and introducing themselves at the start of the recorded video helped.
More STAR questions and answers are on the American Airlines behavioral interview questions page.
What to wear to the In-Person Experience
American’s dress code: men wear a suit with a tie and polished closed-toe dress shoes; women wear a pant or skirt business suit or a professional dress, with skirts and dresses at knee length or longer and moderate heels or flats. Hair below the shoulders must be secured, and facial hair must be between 1/4 inch and 1 inch and well groomed. American says candidates who do not meet these standards may not continue.
American Airlines airport customer service agent interviews
Glassdoor rates the customer service agent interview 2.5 out of 5 with an average of 39 days to hire. The 2026 reports describe a short in-person session:
- A presentation on the job, pay, benefits, hours and training.
- Yes-or-no checks on working weekends, nights and holidays.
- A panel (four interviewers with two candidates in St. Louis; groups in Los Angeles) that asks three behavioral questions.
The question that comes up in Chicago, Los Angeles and St. Louis reports is some version of “tell me about a time you worked with a difficult supervisor and how you handled it.” A Los Angeles hire who applied February 10, 2026 had the group interview on February 19, an offer the same day, and said clearances came in three to four days for candidates who moved fast on paperwork.
American Airlines software engineer and corporate interviews
Glassdoor users rate the Software Engineer process 3 out of 5 with an average of 24 days to hire and 55% positive experiences. Reported loops:
- Dallas, TX, April 2026 (no offer): project questions, a programming question on a list of numbers, then Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, APIs and PostgreSQL.
- Hyderabad, September 2026 (accepted, three weeks): technical rounds on .NET, C#, APIs, SQL, cloud concepts and problem solving, then a leadership round. Asked about a hard production issue and how it was fixed.
- Hyderabad, June 2025 (accepted, through a staffing agency): a third-party technical screen, a technical round with the team and an HR round. React questions on components, the virtual DOM and hooks, JavaScript closures and hoisting, and a small CRUD page.
Two of the five most recent Software Engineer reports on Glassdoor are from Hyderabad, so candidates in India report the same round structure as Dallas.
How to prepare for an American Airlines interview
- Flight attendants: write out five STAR stories (above and beyond, difficult customer, safety, teamwork, a mistake you fixed) and practice them on camera with a one- to two-minute limit. Check your passport date against the December 31, 2027 rule before you apply.
- In-Person Experience: plan the suit, grooming and earrings to American’s written standard, and treat the group activities as part of the interview; be the person who includes quieter candidates.
- Airport agents: be ready to say yes to nights, weekends and holidays only if you mean it, and have a story about a supervisor you disagreed with that ends well.
- Tech: review your main stack in depth, SQL, and how you have run CI/CD pipelines, and prepare one production incident story.
