Fidelity Investments’ interview process starts with a recruiter screening call (skills, location, salary expectations and how many interviews to expect), then one or more interviews with the hiring manager, other associates or a panel, usually on Zoom, then an offer. Every role gets behavioral questions that start with “Tell me about a time…” or “How did you resolve a situation where…”; software engineers add a short coding problem in the hiring manager round and a live coding round on easy string or array problems and core Java, and some loops include a recorded HireVue video interview.
Fidelity is a privately held financial services firm founded in 1946 and based in Boston, with more than 80,000 associates in 11 countries and 215 Investor Centers. It hires both technology staff (large hubs in Boston, Durham and Westlake, Texas appear in candidate reports) and customer-facing staff such as financial representatives and customer service associates.

Fidelity Investments interview questions with answers
Q: What does Map.getOrDefault do in Java, and when would you use it?
map.getOrDefault(key, defaultValue) returns the value mapped to key, or defaultValue if the key is absent. It was added in Java 8 and is the clean way to count with a HashMap: counts.put(word, counts.getOrDefault(word, 0) + 1). Note one subtlety: if the key is present with a null value, it returns null, not the default. For counting, map.merge(word, 1, Integer::sum) does the same in one call. A September 2025 Fidelity candidate was questioned on this method in the final round, so know it cold.
Q: Reverse the words in a string, or check whether two strings are anagrams.
For reversing words, trim the string, split on one or more spaces with split(“\s+”), reverse the array and join with single spaces; that is O(n). For anagrams, if lengths differ return false, otherwise count characters in an int array of 26 (or a HashMap for Unicode), increment for one string and decrement for the other, and check all counts are zero. Mention the Streams alternative if asked, but a plain loop is clearer and faster here.
Q: Explain polymorphism with an example.
Polymorphism lets code call the same method on different types and get type-specific behavior. With runtime polymorphism, an Account base class declares calculateFee(), and BrokerageAccount and RetirementAccount override it; code holding a List of Account calls calculateFee() on each and Java dispatches to the right override. Compile-time polymorphism is method overloading, the same method name with different parameters. Tie it to the open-closed principle: new account types do not require changing the calling code.
Q: What is agile, and how have you used it?
Agile delivers software in short iterations with frequent feedback instead of one long plan. In Scrum, a team plans a two-week sprint from a prioritized backlog, meets daily for a short standup, demos working software at the end and runs a retrospective. Give one real example: what your team shipped in a sprint and one thing a retrospective changed.
Q: Find the missing number in an array containing 0 to n with one value missing.
The expected sum of 0 to n is n(n+1)/2; subtract the actual sum to get the missing value, O(n) time and O(1) space. To avoid overflow for large n, XOR all indices and values together instead: every present number cancels and the missing one remains. Taro lists this among Fidelity-tagged problems.

| Financial representative | Behavioral questions with two hiring managers; reasoning test linked to Series 7 readiness; licensing questions |
Fidelity software engineer interview
Fidelity’s software engineer loop is lighter on algorithms than Big Tech. 2025 US reports on Taro:
- Senior software engineer, United States (September 2025). An HR phone screen; a round with the hiring manager on the resume, STAR behavioral questions and a short coding problem where pseudocode was accepted; then a final live coding round with two principal software engineers on easy string manipulation and core Java, including Map.getOrDefault and whether a Streams version would be better. The process took almost two months and ended without an offer.
- Software engineer, United States (May 2025). A one-hour technical round, then a one-hour behavioral round offered only after passing the technical. The candidate called it straightforward compared with other companies.
Older reports show the same mix of behavioral and OOP questions: a 2018 Jersey City intern was asked how they handle a heavy workload, to explain agile methodology and to explain polymorphism; a 2017 Dallas associate engineer was asked “What is OOP?”
Fidelity HireVue video interview
Some Fidelity loops include a recorded HireVue interview. The 2017 Dallas associate engineer had an HR phone screen, then HireVue with two attempts per question, then two final interviews. A 2020 Dublin senior engineer had seven HireVue questions with three minutes per answer, then a Zoom call with a manager and a principal engineer. Recent US reports more often go straight to live Zoom interviews.
To do well on HireVue: answer each prompt in STAR form inside about two minutes, look at the camera, and use the retake only if your first answer missed the question.
Fidelity financial representative and customer-facing interviews
Fidelity’s careers site names financial customer associate and customer relationship advocate among its popular entry-level roles, and its recruiters say candidates from retail, hospitality and other service jobs should lead with customer-focused experience.
Public reports for licensed phone and branch roles such as financial representative are mostly older Glassdoor reviews, so treat these details as a guide rather than the current process:
- Recruiter call: availability, location, salary expectations and whether you understand the licensing requirement.
- Interview with hiring managers: one reviewer had a two-on-one interview with two hiring managers, mostly behavioral.
- Reasoning test: several reviewers describe a logic or reasoning test that Fidelity uses to gauge how a candidate would do on the Series 7 exam.
- Offer and licensing: Fidelity sponsors and pays for the Series 7 and Series 63 exams, and reviewers describe a structured training program that requires study outside work hours.
Fidelity financial representative interview questions with sample answers
“Tell me about a time you helped a frustrated customer.” “At the bank branch where I worked, a customer was charged an overdraft fee after a deposit hold. I listened without interrupting, explained why the hold happened, and asked my manager to waive the fee as a one-time courtesy. Then I set up a low-balance alert so it would not happen again. He thanked me and opened a savings account the next month.”
“Why do you want to work at Fidelity?” “Fidelity’s stated goal is to strengthen the financial wellbeing of its customers, and this role is where that happens one conversation at a time. I like explaining money clearly, and the sponsored Series 7 and 63 path gives me a real career in financial services.”
“How would you explain a 401(k) rollover to someone who has never heard of it?” “I’d say: when you leave a job, the retirement money you saved there can move to an account you control, without paying tax on it if it’s moved the right way. Then I’d ask what they want to do with it and check they understood before going further.”
“Are you ready to study for the Series 7 while working full time?” “Yes. I passed the SIE on my own in six weeks by studying an hour each evening, and I’d plan the Series 7 the same way with a fixed schedule.”
What to wear and how long to hear back: Fidelity’s recruiters say to dress professionally even on Zoom and to sit in a quiet, neutral setting. After the final interview the recruiter gives you the timeline; Fidelity does not publish a standard number of days.
Who does well in Fidelity interviews
Good fit: You have three or four well-practiced STAR stories with clear results, solid Java or OOP basics, and you can explain financial or technical ideas in plain words. For customer-facing roles, service experience from retail or hospitality counts, as Fidelity’s recruiters say.
Harder path: You prepared only for hard LeetCode problems and skipped behavioral prep. Fidelity’s coding is usually easy to medium, but the behavioral round can decide the outcome; a September 2025 India campus candidate cleared the technical round and was cut at HR.
Fidelity in India
Fidelity also hires engineers in India through campus and lateral hiring. A May 2025 India software intern had an online assessment with coding, an algorithm explanation and CS fundamentals MCQs, then a technical interview on projects with some HR questions, then an HR round. A September 2025 India campus candidate had a technical interview on resume topics and core subjects, then an HR round where they were asked what they knew about Fidelity, and did not clear HR.
A three-week Fidelity prep plan
- Week 1: Write six STAR stories: a customer or user you helped, a conflict, a heavy workload, a mistake, a process you improved, and a time you learned something fast. Record two as 2-minute HireVue-style answers.
- Week 2 (tech): Easy-to-medium string, array and hash map problems in Java, plus Java 8 APIs (getOrDefault, merge, Streams) and OOP terms: polymorphism, inheritance, interfaces. Week 2 (customer-facing): practice explaining a 401(k), an IRA and a rollover in two sentences each; read the SIE and Series 7 outlines.
- Week 3: One mock Zoom panel with two interviewers, dressed as you will be, plus “why Fidelity” and “what do you know about Fidelity” answers that mention something specific, such as its 215 Investor Centers or its focus on customers’ financial wellbeing.
Fidelity pay
Levels.fyi lists US median total compensation for Fidelity software engineers (updated October 31, 2026) of $92,220 at L3, $123,378 at L4, $152,334 at L5 (senior software engineer), $185,671 at L6 and $220,500 at L7. These are self-reported figures.
Fidelity’s own careers pages say the recruiter discusses salary and benefits on the screening call. Pay for financial representative and customer service roles was not available from a current official posting during research for this page; ask the recruiter for the range on the first call.
Frequently asked questions about Fidelity interviews
What is the Fidelity Investments hiring process?
Fidelity’s careers site lists six phases: you apply, a recruiter reviews your resume, a recruiter screening call covers your skills, location, salary expectations and the number of interviews, then formal interviews with the hiring manager, other associates or a panel, then selection and offer, then your decision. Interviews are usually on Zoom, and some roles add a skills assessment, a case study or a recorded HireVue video interview.
What are common Fidelity interview questions?
Fidelity’s recruiters say to expect open-ended behavioral questions that start with “Tell me about a time” or “How did you resolve a situation where.” Candidates also report why Fidelity, what do you know about Fidelity, how you handle a heavy workload, and for technical roles questions on object-oriented programming, polymorphism, agile and core Java.
What is the Fidelity software engineer interview like?
2025 US reports describe a recruiter or HR phone screen, a round with the hiring manager mixing resume questions, STAR behavioral questions and a short coding problem, and a final live coding round with senior engineers. A September 2025 senior engineer had easy string manipulation and core Java questions such as Map.getOrDefault; a May 2025 engineer had a one-hour technical round followed by a one-hour behavioral round.
Does Fidelity use HireVue?
In some loops. A 2018 Jersey City software intern and a 2017 Dallas associate engineer both had a recorded HireVue video interview after or instead of an early phone screen, and a 2020 Dublin senior engineer had seven HireVue questions with three minutes per answer. Recent US reports more often describe live Zoom interviews, so ask your recruiter whether your role has one.
What is the Fidelity financial representative interview like?
Public reports for Fidelity’s licensed customer-facing roles mostly describe behavioral interviews, sometimes two hiring managers at once, plus a reasoning test that reviewers said gauges how you would do on the Series 7 exam. Fidelity sponsors the Series 7 and 63 licenses after hire, and reviewers describe structured training that needs study time outside work. Most of these reviews are several years old.
How much does Fidelity pay software engineers?
Levels.fyi’s US median total compensation for Fidelity software engineers, updated October 2026, is about $92,000 at L3, $123,000 at L4, $152,000 at L5 (senior software engineer), $186,000 at L6 and $221,000 at L7. These are self-reported; the range on your posting or offer is the firmer number.
What should I wear to a Fidelity interview?
Fidelity’s recruiter tips say interviews are usually on Zoom and to dress professionally, sit in a quiet, neutral setting rather than joining while in transit, and avoid being casual. Business casual or a suit jacket works for customer-facing roles.
