AT&T Interview Questions and Answers (2026)

AT&T’s interview process starts with an online assessment for most roles: a situational and behavioral test for retail sales and customer service, and a HackerRank coding test for the Technology Development Program and engineering jobs. After it come a phone screen and one or more interviews. Retail Sales Consultant candidates face sales role-plays such as “if I walked in as a customer, what would you sell me,” and TDP candidates get a LeetCode-style coding round, a debugging exercise and a behavioral final.

AT&T’s careers site says it will never ask for payment or financial information while you apply or interview. Glassdoor data puts the average process at about four weeks, and about two months for the TDP.

  3. Phone screenRecruiter, behavioral
  4. InterviewsHiring manager, panel or group

Stage Format What it tests
Application and prescreening att.jobs Basic qualifications, location
Online assessment Situational test (retail, service) or HackerRank (tech) Judgment, customer handling, or coding
Phone screen Recruiter, behavioral Availability, location preferences, motivation

AT&T interview questions with answers

Q: Write a SQL query for the second-highest salary in an Employees table.

One way is SELECT MAX(salary) FROM Employees WHERE salary is less than (SELECT MAX(salary) FROM Employees). Another is to use DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY salary DESC) in a subquery and select the row with rank 2, which also handles ties and generalizes to the Nth highest. State what you return when there is no second salary: the MAX version returns NULL, which is usually what the question wants.

Q: You are given buggy code that fails a test. How do you debug it?

Run the failing test and read the actual versus expected output first. Reproduce with the smallest input that fails, add prints or a breakpoint around where the values diverge, and form one hypothesis at a time. Fix the root cause, rerun the whole test suite, and add a test for the case you found. AT&T TDP candidates report a debugging exercise right after live coding, so say each step out loud.

Q: How would you deploy one of your projects and handle production traffic while you keep developing?

Asked of a 2025 Hyderabad campus hire. Containerize the app, deploy it behind a load balancer with at least two instances, and keep configuration in environment variables. Develop on branches with CI running tests, deploy to a staging environment first, and release to production with a rolling or blue-green deployment so traffic is never cut off. Add health checks, logging and a quick rollback path.

Q: Check whether a string has balanced brackets.

Walk the string with a stack. Push each opening bracket; on a closing bracket, return false if the stack is empty or the top does not match, otherwise pop. At the end the string is balanced only if the stack is empty. That is O(n) time and O(n) space, and it is a common easy HackerRank warm-up.

AT&T interview questions by role

Role Reported questions and format
Retail Sales Consultant What would you sell me, pitch an iPhone or fiber plan, objections, above and beyond
Customer service Complaint handling, problem-solving with no obvious answer, stress
TDP software engineer HackerRank with SQL, LeetCode-style coding, debugging, system design basics, coworker disagreement
TDP behavioral final (Bothell, 2025) Your strongest skill, a time you presented on a topic you were not prepared for
India Senior Associate Software Engineer Resume, projects, deploying a project and handling production traffic

AT&T assessment

AT&T’s own candidate guides name the Customer Service Assessment-Field (CSAF), which takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and Behavioral Event Interview (BEI) guides for Service Consultant and Sales Associate roles. The Interview Guys report that the assessment is the first gate after the application screen and comes before any recruiter contact, and that no candidate report they reviewed named HireVue or another video vendor. A separate Interview Guys guide to retail hiring calls the retail test a Virtual Job Tryout, so the name you see may differ; what matters is that it is role-specific and scored before a human reads your application.

Expect situational questions about customers and coworkers where you pick the most and least effective response. For technology roles, the test is on HackerRank instead (see the TDP section below).

AT&T interview questions for retail sales consultants

The Retail Sales Consultant is AT&T’s main store role, and most people searching for AT&T interview questions are applying for it.

Pay on recent listings

  • A San Francisco Retail Sales Consultant listing showed $21.43 to $24.95 an hour.
  • A Madison, Wisconsin listing gave a total of $40,000 to $63,000 a year including hourly pay and uncapped commission, and said the top of the range depends on meeting or beating sales goals.
  • Several listings mentioned a sign-on bonus of up to $10,000 for qualified hires, paid in parts.

AT&T store hiring process

  1. Apply on att.jobs.
  2. Assessment, right after applying.
  3. Phone or video interview with a recruiter or manager.
  4. In-person or panel interview. Some candidates describe a group panel; others a one-on-one with the store manager. A role-play is common.
  5. Conditional offer, then a background check and drug screening. One candidate reported having to complete the drug test within 24 to 48 hours of the offer email.

Glassdoor estimates about 6 days to hire for this role, from only three reports.

Retail sales consultant interview questions

  • If I were to walk in as a customer, what would you sell me?
  • Why would you be a good fit for this position?
  • How would you pitch an iPhone or a fiber internet plan to a customer?
  • How do you overcome customer objections?
  • Describe a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
  • Describe a time you had a conflict with a coworker.
  • Tell me about a situation you would have handled differently.

Know AT&T’s current wireless plans, fiber speed tiers and bundles at a basic level; candidates report being asked to pitch them on the spot. Sample answers are on the AT&T behavioral interview questions page.

What to wear

AT&T does not publish an interview dress code for stores. Business casual fits a store interview.

AT&T customer service interview

AT&T’s CSAF guide covers field customer service, and the BEI guides cover service consultants. The Interview Guys drew two of their most likely customer service questions from the CSAF guide: a customer problem-solving question and a situational complaint question. Installation technician candidates report questions about stress and difficult customers. The order is the same as for stores: assessment, phone screen, then an interview with a manager or panel.

AT&T Technology Development Program interview

The Technology Development Program (TDP) is AT&T’s rotational program for new graduates. The posting describes a 24 to 36 month program across four tracks: software engineer, data science engineer, systems engineer and network engineer. The 2026 posting required a four-year or graduate STEM degree completed before the start date, availability to start full time by July 2026, five days a week in the office in the posted city, and no relocation. Pay was listed at $77,800 to $130,800 a year.

For the 2027 cohort, the posting (req R-121905) opened September 21, 2026 with an end date of November 14, 2026 and a mid-July 2027 start, per Extern’s guide; it also notes an AT&T alert page saying 2027 hiring had finished, so check att.jobs directly.

TDP interview rounds reported in 2025

Round What candidates reported
Online assessment HackerRank. A Dallas candidate (August 2025) had four questions in one hour: two standard coding questions and a basic SQL question. Others reported a few questions, medium to hard, and camera-on proctoring.
Screening interview 3-4 behavioral questions plus location preferences (Dallas, February 2025)
Technical interview About an hour: two LeetCode-style questions, a debugging exercise and system design questions; or live coding then debugging
Final interview Behavioral, an hour with an associate director in one case; “a time you disagreed with a coworker”

A September 2025 Bothell TDP hire went from OA to offer in about 3 to 4 weeks, with each interview 30 to 60 minutes. Glassdoor’s TDP average is about 60 days.

Who does well in AT&T interviews

Good fit: For stores, you can pitch a product after asking two questions and you have a number from a past sales or service job. For the TDP, you can solve easy-to-medium problems, write basic SQL and debug code out loud.

Harder path: TDP candidates who prepare only LeetCode. Reports show SQL in the HackerRank and a separate debugging exercise, and the program requires five days a week in the office in the posted city.

AT&T India: Hyderabad and Bengaluru hiring

AT&T hires engineers in India, and campus drives in Hyderabad appear in 2025 reports. A September 2025 campus hire for Senior Associate Software Engineer had an in-person technical and assessment round covering resume, projects, communication and handling pressure, with a question on how to deploy a project and handle production traffic while developing in parallel, then an HR and managerial round. An April 2025 Graduate Engineer Trainee candidate in Hyderabad had an online campus drive with panels that asked about resume projects, some DSA problems and intermediate database questions. Neither report gave a package figure, and AT&T does not publish India pay.

A three-week AT&T prep plan

  1. Week 1: Store and service candidates: write six stories (objection, above and beyond, coworker conflict, a mistake, stress, presenting without preparation) and learn AT&T’s main wireless and fiber plans. TDP candidates: 15 easy and medium array, string and hash map problems on HackerRank.
  2. Week 2: Store candidates: practice the “what would you sell me” role-play aloud five times. TDP candidates: 10 SQL problems (joins, GROUP BY, window functions) and three debugging sessions on code you did not write.
  3. Week 3: One full mock: assessment-style situational questions or a timed HackerRank set, then a 45-minute behavioral mock. TDP candidates add one simple system design talk-through.

Frequently asked questions about AT&T interviews

What is the AT&T interview process?

AT&T’s careers site describes three stages: application and prescreening, interview, and job offer. In practice most roles add an online assessment after the application, then a phone screen and one or more interviews with a hiring manager or panel. Offers are followed by a background check, and candidates report drug screening for some roles.

What are common AT&T interview questions for retail sales consultants?

Candidates and guides report: if I walked in as a customer, what would you sell me; why would you be a good fit for this position; how would you pitch an iPhone or a fiber plan; how do you handle a customer objection; and a time you went above and beyond for a customer. Some stores use a group panel interview and a role-play.

What is on the AT&T assessment?

AT&T’s published candidate guides name a Customer Service Assessment-Field that takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and Behavioral Event Interview guides for sales and service roles. The assessment uses situational and behavioral items and comes before any recruiter call. Technology roles get a HackerRank coding test instead.

What is the AT&T Technology Development Program interview?

2025 TDP candidates reported a HackerRank online assessment (one Dallas candidate had four questions in one hour, including a basic SQL question), a behavioral screen with location preferences, a technical interview with LeetCode-style coding and a debugging exercise, and a final behavioral interview, one of them an hour with an associate director.

How much does the AT&T Technology Development Program pay?

The TDP posting lists $77,800 to $130,800 a year, depending on location, experience and education. The 2026 posting required a STEM degree before the start date, five days a week in the office, and no relocation.

How long does AT&T take to hire?

Glassdoor data cited by The Interview Guys puts AT&T’s average at about 27 to 28 days, and about 60 days for the Technology Development Program. A September 2025 TDP hire in Bothell reported 3 to 4 weeks.

Does AT&T hire in India?

Yes, mainly engineers in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. A September 2025 Hyderabad campus hire for Senior Associate Software Engineer had an in-person technical round on resume, projects and handling pressure, then an HR and managerial round.
