The CVS interview process for store and pharmacy roles is an online application, the Virtual Job Tryout (an online assessment CVS uses for many high-volume jobs), then a phone or video interview, and for many candidates a short in-store interview with the pharmacist, pharmacy lead or store manager. Pharmacy technician interviews focus on patient situations, empathy, schedule and why CVS; some include quick mental math. Glassdoor rates the CVS pharmacy technician interview 2.0 out of 5 across 1,263 reports, with 17 days to hire.
Several 2026 pharmacy technicians were hired after a single recruiter call. Shift supervisor candidates get a slightly longer conversation about handling customers and supervising a shift. Corporate roles at CVS Health run separate recruiter-led loops.

CVS Health hiring process, step by step
1. Apply on jobs.cvshealth.com
CVS describes its process as search, apply, review, interviews and offer. Applications run through Workday, where you can check status at any time. CVS says applicants who are not selected may not receive individual feedback.
2. The CVS Virtual Job Tryout (VJT)
CVS says: “With many of our high-volume roles, we evaluate applicants by having them complete the Virtual Job Tryout (VJT).” It is a step in the interview process, launched from a task on your Candidate Home page after you submit the application. CVS says it considers experience, job-related skills and interview performance when deciding. The help-ticket link for VJT problems on CVS’s hiring page goes to a HireVue-hosted support desk.
What the VJT measures. CVS does not publish the questions, and versions differ by role. The pharmacy technician posting lists the abilities the job is judged on, and these are the areas to be ready for:
- Attention and focus: concentrating on a task, switching tasks quickly, confirming prescription information and label accuracy
- Customer service and team orientation: noticing patients’ reactions and responding appropriately
- Communication and active listening
- Mathematical reasoning: working out the total number of tablets to dispense, the day’s supply, and the number of full and extra bottles needed
- Problem resolution: spotting a difficult patient or colleague interaction and choosing the best course of action among several options
An Indianapolis shift supervisor applicant in 2026 described forms before the interview about personality, how you work with people, how you learn and how you teach, and believed you had to pass them to be offered an interview.
3. About “CVS Virtual Job Tryout answers”
Pages that promise VJT answers cannot know which version you will get. Situational items ask how you would act, so a copied answer list can leave your responses contradicting each other, and it skips the skills the pharmacy actually needs. What helps:
- Read the essential functions on your posting and answer situational items the way you would actually act at that workstation.
- Pick patient safety and accuracy over speed when the two conflict. The posting puts label accuracy and patient safety ahead of throughput.
- Practice day’s-supply arithmetic. Example: a prescription for 1 tablet twice a day for 30 days is 60 tablets. If 90 tablets are dispensed at 1 tablet three times a day, the day’s supply is 30.
- Take it somewhere quiet, in one sitting if you can, and use the HireVue help ticket if the tool fails.
4. Phone, video and store interviews
Several 2026 candidates had only a phone interview. A Huntington Beach, California technician had a 10-15 minute call on past experience, why they left their last job, why CVS and how they heard about the opening. Others met the pharmacist or a store manager in person. A Houston, Texas trainee was interviewed by the pharmacist, who wanted to see how they would handle stress with difficult patients.
5. Offer, drug screen and training
A Telephone, Texas technician in September 2026 described the order: recruiter call, offer, scheduled drug screen, then onboarding. Technicians then complete CVS’s training program and their state’s registration and certification steps.
CVS pharmacy tech interview questions and sample answers
Questions reported by CVS pharmacy technician candidates on Glassdoor, 2024-2026.
Why do you want to work at CVS? “I want to start in healthcare in a role where I talk to patients every day. CVS trains technicians from the start, and I would like to get my certification through work.”
Why did you leave your last job? Keep it short and forward-looking. “The store cut evening hours and I needed more of them. I want a job with a steady schedule where I can learn a skill.”
What does your schedule look like, and why do you stand out? Reported in New York (2025). “I am open nights and weekends, which the posting asks for. I stand out because I double-check my work. At my last job I caught pricing errors that others missed.”
How do you handle a difficult patient? “I let them explain, repeat back the problem, and tell them what I can do right now. If it is something only the pharmacist can answer, I say so and get the pharmacist instead of guessing.”
Tell me about showing empathy in a hard situation with no immediate fix. Reported in October 2026. “A patient’s insurance rejected a refill and it could not be solved that day. I explained the reason in plain words, called the insurer’s line while she waited to confirm the next step, and checked if a partial fill was possible under the pharmacist’s direction. She left knowing exactly what would happen next.”
Do you have a license? Asked of a Richmond, Virginia trainee. Answer honestly and say you are willing to complete the training and certification. CVS requires state licensure and certification steps after hire.
Basic mental math. The Richmond trainee was asked simple math to do in their head. Practice tablets-per-day times days, and dividing a quantity by the daily dose.
CVS interview questions for store and shift supervisor roles
Glassdoor rates the CVS shift supervisor interview 2.0 out of 5 across 215 reports, with 16 days to hire. Reported questions:
- What is a time you had to deal with a difficult customer? Why should we hire you?
- Tell me about your previous jobs and what you will provide to us.
- How would you handle certain customer situations in the store? (North Miami, FL, August 2026)
- What is your greatest strength? (Indianapolis, IN, 2026)
- How old are you, what experience do you have, and have you worked in customer service before? (a cashier applicant offered shift supervisor on the phone)
An October 2026 shift supervisor said the interview was more of a conversation, with the hiring manager trying to get a sense of the candidate.
CVS Health corporate and technology interviews
CVS Health also hires for Aetna, CVS Caremark and corporate technology teams, with roles such as data scientist among the most-reported on Glassdoor. These do not use the store VJT path. Glassdoor’s summary of CVS reviews describes a recruiter screen first, then the hiring manager and a few structured rounds with STAR behavioral questions and role-specific technical tasks, usually 1-3 weeks end to end. Public reports for these loops are thinner than for pharmacy roles, so ask your recruiter for the round list.
The same four values on CVS’s careers site apply: We care, We innovate with purpose, We are accountable, and We prioritize safety and quality.
Who does well in CVS interviews
Good fit: You are open nights and weekends, you are careful with details, and you can stay calm with a frustrated patient. Pharmacy or retail experience helps, but the posting lists 1-3 years as preferred, not required.
Harder path: Candidates who treat the VJT as a test to game. It is the first filter for high-volume roles, and inconsistent answers can end the process before any interview.
What to wear and how to prepare
- Clothes: CVS does not publish an interview dress code. Business casual is safe for an in-store meeting with a pharmacist or manager.
- Have your schedule ready: The posting requires nights and weekends, and schedule questions came up in many reports.
- Know your state’s technician rules: Licensure and certification steps vary by state.
- Practice two patient stories: one difficult patient, one where you caught a mistake.
CVS pay for pharmacy technicians
CVS lists a typical pay range on postings. A 2026 part-time (25 hours a week) pharmacy technician posting in Westland, Michigan listed $16.50-$25.00 per hour, covering every position in that job grade, with the actual offer based on experience, education and location. Benefits on the posting include a 401(k) with company match, an employee stock purchase plan and tuition assistance.
Frequently asked questions about CVS interviews
What is the CVS hiring process?
CVS Health lists five steps: search, apply, review, interviews and offer. For many high-volume roles, including pharmacy technician, the review step includes a Virtual Job Tryout that you launch from your Candidate Home page in Workday after applying. If selected, CVS contacts you for a phone call or video interview, and store candidates often then meet the pharmacist or store manager. A drug screen and background check follow the offer.
What is the CVS Virtual Job Tryout?
The Virtual Job Tryout (VJT) is an online assessment CVS uses for many high-volume roles as a step in its interview process. CVS does not publish its questions. Its pharmacy technician postings list the skills the job requires: attention to detail and label accuracy, customer service, communication, problem resolution when choosing between options, and math such as working out the number of tablets to dispense and the day’s supply.
Are there CVS Virtual Job Tryout answers?
No reliable ones. The tryout asks how you would handle work situations and checks job skills, and the versions differ by role. Copying answers from a website risks inconsistent responses and does not prepare you for the job tasks it reflects. Prepare by reading the posting’s essential functions, practicing day’s-supply math and answering situational items the way you actually work.
What are CVS pharmacy tech interview questions?
Reported questions include why you want to work at CVS, why you left your last job, your schedule, why you stand out, how you handle a difficult patient, how you show empathy in hard situations with no immediate fix, and whether you have a technician license. A Richmond, Virginia trainee was also asked basic mental math questions.
How much does a CVS pharmacy technician make?
A 2026 CVS part-time pharmacy technician posting in Westland, Michigan listed a typical pay range of $16.50-$25.00 an hour for the job grade.
Do you need a license to be a CVS pharmacy technician?
Not always before you apply. CVS says technicians must meet their state board of pharmacy rules on age, education and licensure, and must complete a company training program and all registration and certification requirements after hire. Where the state sets no minimum age, CVS requires technicians to be at least 16.
How long does CVS take to hire?
Glassdoor averages 17 days for pharmacy technicians, 16 days for shift supervisors and 20 days across CVS Health. Some 2026 pharmacy technicians were offered the job after one recruiter phone call, followed by a drug screen and onboarding.
