The FedEx interview process depends on the job. Package handlers apply online, often through a chat-style application, then get a short call about availability and transportation; many report no real interview before the background check and orientation. Couriers and delivery drivers have a short in-person or phone interview that confirms you will work in any weather and lift 50 pounds, followed by three or so STAR behavioral questions. Corporate and tech roles run a recruiter call, one or two technical rounds and a managerial round.
FedEx Express and FedEx Ground hire drivers differently. Express hires couriers directly, while Ground delivery drivers are hired by the contracted businesses that run Ground routes.

FedEx’s careers site describes a general road map of five steps: find a job, apply online, interview “via phone, video, or in-person” for jobs that require it, receive an offer with compensation and benefits, and go through onboarding. The site says some jobs do not require an interview, which matches what package handlers report.
FedEx courier and driver interviews
FedEx Express courier requirements
A FedEx Express “Courier/Swing Drvr/DOT-3” posting in Ocala, Florida lists a high school diploma or GED, age 21 or older, six months of courier experience preferred, lifting 50 pounds, enough English to read traffic signs and respond to officials, a valid license for the vehicle type, a good driving record under company policy, and a medical exam under FMCSA or FAA regulations. FedEx’s driver careers page also lists swing, part-time and casual driver jobs.
Courier interview format and questions
Glassdoor rates the courier interview 2.3 out of 5 with an average of 20 days to hire. Reported questions:
- Will you work in any weather? Can you deal with changing weather? (Goleta, CA, December 2025)
- Will you be on time and keep good attendance? Can you lift up to 50 pounds on your own? (US, February 2026)
- Describe a time you had to adapt. Describe a time you dealt with a stressful situation at work. Describe a time you had to be well organized. (US, February 2026)
- Name a time you had a difficult customer and how you handled it. (Phoenix, AZ, November 2025, offer in four days)
- Tell me about yourself, then a walk through a typical courier week. (Goleta, CA)
A Phoenix courier summed it up: if you agree to be on time and work in any weather, you should get an offer. STAR answers for these are on the FedEx behavioral interview questions page.
FedEx Ground delivery drivers
FedEx Ground delivers through contracted service providers. In a 2014 FedEx newsroom statement, FedEx Ground said that since 2011 it has only contracted with incorporated businesses that treat their drivers as their employees. In practice the Ground driver interview is run by that business, not by FedEx, and the questions are about driving history, schedule and the vehicle. A February 2025 Glassdoor delivery driver report described a delivery ride-along where the interviewer asked about weekend availability and whether the candidate had driven a large truck. A March 2025 Durham, North Carolina driver was asked about availability during peak and slow periods.
What to wear
FedEx does not publish an interview dress code for hourly roles. Wear clean, practical clothes and closed-toe shoes; for a ride-along, dress for the weather and for climbing in and out of a truck.
FedEx corporate and software engineer interviews
Glassdoor rates the Software Engineer process 2.5 out of 5, with 52% positive experiences and an average of 61 days to hire. Reported loops:
- Software Developer, US (April 2026, accepted offer): three rounds: a phone call to match experience to the skill set, a technical round on SQL and case studies, and a behavioral round on scenarios, past projects and leadership.
- Software Engineer, Nashville, TN (2024, declined offer): a recruiter call, then a technical phone interview with a LeetCode easy to medium problem; offer a couple of days later.
- Software Engineer, Pittsburgh, PA (2024, accepted offer): HR screen, a data structures coding round, a face-to-face round on past experience and tech stack, and a managerial round.
- Software Engineer, Orlando, FL (2024, no offer): a phone interview on background and stack, including which message queue they had used and whether they had used JMS.
FedEx also hires engineers in Hyderabad under FedEx Express (AMEA); those postings appear on the same careers site.
How to prepare for a FedEx interview
- Package handlers: know exactly which shifts you can work, have a transportation plan, and keep your phone on after applying, since calls and orientation dates can come within days.
- Couriers: prepare three short STAR stories (adapting to a change, a stressful day, staying organized) and one difficult-customer story. Have your license and driving record ready, and be ready to say yes to weather and attendance questions only if you mean it.
- Ground drivers: expect a ride-along or a talk about the truck; bring your license and any delivery or box-truck experience.
- Tech: review SQL joins and aggregation, one data structures topic a day at LeetCode easy to medium, and the message queues and stack on your resume.
FedEx package handler hiring process
- Apply online. Package handler postings on careers.fedex.com send you to an external Paradox application page. A Carson, California handler who started in 2025 described it as an “online AI application”, and a 2025 delivery driver applicant said they applied by chatting with an AI and entering details.
- Schedule check. You pick or confirm shifts. The Carson handler said there were no questions; FedEx wanted to know you are free for the shifts offered.
- Short call (sometimes). A July 2026 Lansing, Michigan handler had a call with basic questions about transportation and a walk through the job, then an offer. A June 2026 handler described a phone call first, then the background check.
- Background check and drug test. These are the most common stages on Glassdoor’s package handler reports (20% and 19%). Several handlers say this is the longest wait.
- Orientation. A July 2026 San Francisco handler was offered the job within a week by call and email, and orientation at a local facility started at 3 a.m. and took two days plus one day of training. An August 2026 handler applied online and was at orientation the next day.
Glassdoor users rate the package handler interview 1.4 out of 5 for difficulty, with an average of 12 days to hire across 689 reports.
What the package handler job requires
A FedEx Express “Handler (DOT) - Warehouse-2 (Part Time)” posting in Hebron, Kentucky requires lifting 50 pounds without help from the ground to chest level, moving heavier packages with equipment or a second person, a valid driver’s license, and a medical exam under FMCSA or FAA rules because of DOT work. The October 2026 Pocatello, Idaho posting describes loading, unloading and sorting packages of various sizes as physical work, with an early-morning Monday through Saturday shift available.
Package handler interview questions with sample answers
Q: How soon can you start?
An August 2026 handler was asked only this. Give a date and mention you can attend orientation on short notice: “I can start this week, and I can make an early orientation, including a 3 a.m. start.”
Q: Are you available for this shift?
Be exact about which shifts and days you can work and keep to it. Part-time handlers work one shift of about 3-6 hours, and early-morning and overnight sorts are common, so say plainly if you can do a 3 a.m. start or a twilight shift.
Q: How will you get to work?
A Lansing handler was asked about transportation. Name your plan and a backup: “I drive my own car, and my roommate works the same sort if the car is in the shop.” Early shifts often start before buses run.
Q: Can you lift 50 pounds?
Answer honestly. Postings require 50 pounds from ground to chest without help, and heavier packages with equipment or a teammate. If you have done warehouse, moving or restaurant stock work, say so.
Q: What is your previous work experience?
A June 2026 handler was asked this. Pick anything physical or shift-based: stocking, food service, landscaping, moving. Mention attendance: “Two years at a grocery store on the morning truck crew, never missed a shift.”
FedEx pay
| Posting | Location | Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Package Handler - Part Time (Warehouse like), Federal Express Corporation, October 2026 | Pocatello, ID | $17.75-$18.25 an hour to start, paid weekly, overtime after 40 hours |
The same posting lists tuition reimbursement of $5,250 a year from the first day, up to five weeks of paid time off a year, and paid parental leave. FedEx’s careers site confirms the $5,250 yearly tuition benefit for US and Canada employees. Courier and Hebron handler postings did not show pay when checked.
Frequently asked questions about FedEx interviews
What are FedEx package handler interview questions?
Often there are almost none. Many 2026 package handlers report applying online, getting a call about availability and transportation, then going straight to a background check and orientation. When questions are asked they are: when can you start, can you work this shift (some orientations start at 3 a.m.), how will you get to work, can you lift 50 pounds, and what is your previous work experience. Glassdoor rates the package handler interview 1.4 out of 5 for difficulty.
What are FedEx courier interview questions?
Courier candidates report a short in-person or phone interview that first confirms you will work in any weather, show up on time and lift up to 50 pounds, then asks three or so STAR-format behavioral questions such as describe a time you had to adapt, describe a time you dealt with a stressful situation at work, describe a time you had to be well organized, and name a time you handled a difficult customer.
Is FedEx Ground hiring different from FedEx Express?
Yes, for drivers. FedEx Express (Federal Express Corporation) hires its couriers directly, and its courier postings require drivers to be at least 21, hold a valid license with a good driving record and pass an FMCSA or FAA medical exam. FedEx Ground delivery is done by contracted service providers; FedEx has said that since 2011 FedEx Ground only contracts with incorporated businesses that treat their drivers as their own employees, so a Ground driver interview is run by that business.
How much does FedEx pay package handlers?
Pay depends on the location. An October 2026 FedEx Express package handler posting in Pocatello, Idaho listed $17.75-$18.25 an hour to start, paid weekly, with overtime after 40 hours. Part-time handlers there work one shift a day of generally 3-6 hours, and full-time handlers two shifts of generally 6-10 hours.
How long does FedEx take to hire?
Glassdoor lists an average of 12 days to hire for package handlers, 8 days for delivery drivers, 20 days for couriers and 61 days for software engineers. Package handlers often wait longest on the background check before orientation.
Does FedEx drug test?
For many roles, yes. Drug tests appear in 19% of Glassdoor package handler reports and 22% of courier reports, and FedEx courier and DOT handler postings require a medical exam under FMCSA or FAA rules. Check the posting for your role.
What is the FedEx software engineer interview process?
Reports from 2024-26 describe a recruiter or HR call, one or two technical rounds and a managerial round. A 2026 Software Developer had a phone call, a technical round on SQL and case studies, and a behavioral round on scenarios and past projects. A 2024 Nashville candidate had a LeetCode easy to medium problem in a technical phone interview and an offer a couple of days later.
