2025 reports describe a Coinbase interview process with more screening than most tech loops: an AI interview in some cases, a 15-minute cognitive test, a work-style or cultural assessment, a recruiter call and a multi-level CodeSignal coding test, followed by an onsite of three or four one-on-one interviews and a hiring manager conversation. Candidates who got offers described the CodeSignal problem as practical and the later rounds as smooth; candidates who were rejected most often cited the screening tests, heavy follow-ups, or feedback that they did not communicate enough.
Coinbase interview process round by round
| Round | Duration | What candidates reported |
|---|---|---|
| AI interview | Not stated | An automated first interview (October 2025) |
| Cognitive test | 15 min | 50 IQ-style questions; almost no one finishes |
| Work-style or cultural assessment | Varies | About 150 questions, or a cultural quiz |
| Recruiter call | ~30 min | Background and logistics |
| CodeSignal | Self-paced | Four progressive levels; two-week window in one report |
| Onsite | 3-4 interviews | Coding with follow-ups, object-oriented or low-level design, behavioral |
| Hiring manager | One call | Why Coinbase, what you want next |
Coinbase interview process in 2025: what candidates reported
These are self-reported accounts on Taro (jointaro.com). Each is one candidate’s experience.
- Software engineer, United States (July 2025, offer). A CodeSignal assessment with four levels, each building on the previous one, where you must finish a level before moving on. Not LeetCode-style, closer to designing a small system. The candidate called it pretty straightforward.
- Software engineer, New York (September 2025, no offer). A recruiter reached out, then a 30-minute phone screen, a CodeSignal test and a cultural assessment quiz with two weeks to complete both, then four one-on-one onsite interviews. One question: how did you learn something new?
- Software engineer, United States (October 2025, no offer). An AI interview, then a cognitive test of 50 questions in 15 minutes and a work-style assessment of about 150 questions, then a recruiter call. The candidate said the promised feedback never came, and that the remaining steps would have been a coding assessment, an in-person interview and several final rounds.
- Software engineer IC4, United States (July 2025, no offer). Phone screen, cognitive assessment, self-paced technical assessment, a preparatory meeting, then three final interviews, two technical. Rejected with feedback to communicate more, despite solving every problem.
- Software engineer, Seattle (November 2025, no offer). LeetCode-style questions the candidate found relatively straightforward, including sorting a linked list and a binary tree problem.
- Software engineer intern, United States (March 2025, accepted offer). An OA, a behavioral round and a technical interview over a few weeks. The OA was hardest. Behavioral question: what intrigues you about crypto?
- Software engineer intern, San Francisco (March 2025, accepted offer). A design-style problem from LeetCode’s system design tag with implementation follow-ups.
- New grad, United States (November 2025, no offer). Onsite on object-oriented programming and design, then a hiring manager interview on why Coinbase and what they were looking for, after a long gap. The recruiter kept in touch throughout.
- New grad, San Francisco (March 2025, no offer). Phone interview, then two technical interviews. Result about a week later.
- SDE intern, Bengaluru (November 2025, no offer). CodeSignal DSA and personality assessment, an AI interview, a recruiter call, then a low-level design round: design a wallet with multiple currency support.
Detailed interview experiences
Experience 1: Software engineer, US, offer (July 2025)
CodeSignal: Four levels on one problem. Each level adds requirements, and the next level opens only after the current one passes.
Style: Practical, more like designing a small system than solving a puzzle.
Takeaway: Write small classes with clear methods from level one, so later levels mean adding code rather than rewriting it.
Experience 2: Software engineer IC4, US (July 2025)
Rounds: Phone screen, cognitive assessment, self-paced technical assessment, preparatory meeting, then three final interviews (two technical).
Result: Rejected. The candidate solved all technical problems; feedback said they should have communicated more. They felt interviewers could have asked more questions while they worked.
Takeaway: Narrate as you code: your plan, the edge case you are handling, and why. Coinbase treats silence as a missing signal.
Experience 3: New grad, San Francisco (March 2025)
Technical interview 1: The interviewer added follow-up after follow-up. The candidate got flustered on the last one and was told every follow-up had to be solved to advance.
Technical interview 2: A welcoming interviewer who asked questions to understand the approach.
Result: Rejected about a week later.
Takeaway: Practice problems with three or four extensions in a row, and keep a steady pace when new requirements arrive.
Experience 4: Software engineer, New York (September 2025)
Screening: A 30-minute phone screen, then a CodeSignal test and a cultural assessment quiz with a two-week window.
Onsite: Four one-on-one interviews. One behavioral question was how they learned something new.
Result: No offer, positive experience.
Experience 5: SDE intern, Bengaluru (November 2025)
Rounds: CodeSignal DSA plus personality assessment, an AI interview, a recruiter call, then low-level design.
LLD question: Design a wallet with multiple currency support.
Takeaway: Store amounts as integers in each currency’s smallest unit, and treat conversion as one atomic debit and credit.
