How IBM fresher interviews usually run, campus and off-campus. Patterns shift by year and role, so treat this as a prep map, not a script.
IBM placement process includes: 1. Online Assessment (90 minutes) - Aptitude, technical, and coding sections. 2. Technical Interview (45 minutes) - Programming problems, technical concepts, and project discussion. 3. HR Interview (30 minutes) - General discussion about compensation and role expectations. Total duration: 2-3 weeks from application to offer.
Eligibility (from student reports): 6.5+ CGPA in 10th, 12th, and graduation.
Fresher package ballpark (from student reports): Associate: ₹4.5-6 LPA. Confirm on your offer letter.
One coding question. This account reports two variants in circulation: converting a number to a Roman numeral, or a Linux-command conversion problem. Other IBM write-ups describe a 30-minute, single-question, LeetCode-easy version. All rounds are elimination rounds.
Round 2 - English assessment
Timed MCQ sections on synonyms, vocabulary and spelling. The write-up flags this as the surprise round: it looks trivial and it eliminated a lot of people.
Round 3 - Group discussion
Extempore format, raise your hand to speak. Topic: online shopping vs offline shopping, followed by cross-questioning.
Round 4 - Technical + HR (combined)
Explain binary search. MySQL INSERT and UPDATE queries. Networking basics.
Project deep-dive, including how the ORM was used.
HR questions in the same conversation: family background, whether you consider yourself a good learner, relocation, hobbies.
Result: Selected. The candidate says the project explanation went badly and credits overall communication for carrying the round. What helped: the technical bar for ASE sits at fundamentals level. Being articulate about a shaky answer beat going silent.
Experience 2: Associate System Engineer, off-campus (2023-24)
Same funnel - Code Knack coding test and the English assessment on the same day - but the group discussion was held offline (18 January 2024) and passed most participants.
The technical interview the next day was almost entirely resume-driven, and ran online even though candidates had been called to the office.
An extra elimination interview followed on 12 February, which the candidate describes as noticeably harder.
Result: Rejected on 1 March, after having received a selection letter and turned down other offers. Takeaway: off-campus IBM cycles run long and can add rounds after a positive signal. Treat an early “selected” mail as provisional until the offer letter and joining date are in hand, and keep other processes alive until then. Note also that IBM’s assessments are AI-proctored with a webcam requirement.
After technical rounds, IBM usually closes with a short HR / hiring-manager conversation: motivation, location, notice period, and a couple of behavioural stories. Prepare those answers on the dedicated page rather than cramming them into this hub.
