HSBC Online Assessment & Coding Questions 2026

Prepare for the HSBC online assessment and coding questions with the CoCubes pattern candidates actually report: timed MCQs, a short coding window, then a Values Assessment cut before interviews.

Overview

HSBC Technology India’s fresher filter is usually a two-phase online assessment on CoCubes, followed by a separate Values Assessment. Most candidates exit on the OA. This page is the dedicated prep brief for that filter - pattern, coding themes, timing, and what to practise. Round-by-round stories live on the interview experience page; behavioural frameworks live on the HR page.

HSBC OA pattern at a glance

Phase Typical duration What you face What clears you
Phase 1 - MCQs ~75 min ~70 questions: aptitude (~20), English (~20), technical MCQs (~30) Coverage and pace; do not stall on one item
Phase 2 - Coding ~30 min 2 problems, easy to easy-moderate At least one full AC (all test cases); both is stronger
Values Assessment 20-30 min (often take-home) Situational / psychometric choices Consistent answers aligned to published HSBC values

One widely shared on-campus funnel tracked 254 at the assessment, 76 at values, 47 at technical, and 15 at HR - so the online assessment does the heavy filtering. Treat that funnel as one campus snapshot, not a universal quota.

Phase 1: aptitude, English, and technical MCQs

Aptitude (~20)

Percentages, ratios, time and work, averages, and light data interpretation show up often. Difficulty is usually easy-moderate; the constraint is time (~1 minute per question across the full paper).

English (~20)

Error spotting, sentence rearrangement, vocabulary in context, and short reading comprehension. Skip and return; unfinished verbal sections sink otherwise strong technical scores.

Technical MCQs (~30)

Reported themes cluster around:

  • DBMS: keys, normalisation, transactions, ACID at MCQ depth
  • OOP: inheritance, polymorphism, overloading vs overriding
  • OS / Linux: process vs thread, basic commands, scheduling vocabulary
  • Some drives add light Java/output tracing or cloud vocabulary

Prep tip: Drill mixed 70-question mocks under 75 minutes. Log every miss by topic; the next mock should overweight that log, not random new chapters.

Phase 2: HSBC coding questions

Candidate reports for the coding phase converge on:

Detail Typical report
Count 2 problems
Window ~30 minutes
Difficulty Easy + easy-to-moderate
Topics Arrays, strings, hashing, frequency maps, basic logic
Progress bar Finish one completely before polishing the second

Coding themes to practise

  1. Two Sum / pair with target - hash map in O(n); explain why nested loops fail the time limit
  2. String reverse, palindrome, anagram checks - two pointers; watch immutable String costs in Java
  3. Frequency / majority / first unique character - map or array of counts
  4. Simple array transforms - rotate, remove duplicates in a sorted array, running sum
  5. Edge cases interviewers care about - empty input, single element, all duplicates, large N

You are not expected to invent hard graph DP under this timer. You are expected to ship one correct solution with clean I/O for the platform.

Languages

Public campus notes commonly allow C, C++, Java, and Python. Confirm the language list in your CoCubes instructions; do not switch languages mid-drive.

Worked approach (not a leaked paper)

For a typical “find if two numbers sum to target” style prompt:

  1. Clarify constraints aloud in your head (sorted? duplicates? integer range?)
  2. Prefer a hash set / map over O(n²) unless N is tiny
  3. Print exactly the format the sample expects
  4. Mentally walk empty array and single-element cases before submit
  5. Only then open the second problem

HSBC Values Assessment (after coding)

This is not optional fluff. It sits between the OA and interviews and has cut large numbers of candidates in shared funnels. You see workplace scenarios and choose best/worst or most-like-you responses. Read HSBC’s published values (commonly framed around being Open, Connected, and Dependable) on the careers site before you open the link, then answer consistently toward transparency, early escalation, and collaboration.

Full behavioural sample answers for the later HR round are on the HSBC HR interview questions page.

India Technology vs global graduate assessments

Track Platforms candidates report Prep focus
India Technology campus (TSE / SDE) CoCubes MCQs + coding, then Values Assessment Timed aptitude + one full coding AC + values consistency
UK / global graduate routes Often SHL numerical/verbal/inductive, HireVue, sometimes assessment centre Reasoning tests, video answers, group exercise / case

If your portal says HireVue or experience day, do not grind only CoCubes coding dumps. If it says CoCubes plus a values email, prioritise this page’s pattern.

Timed prep plan (10 days)

Days Focus
1-3 One full 75-min MCQ mock daily; log misses by section
4-6 Two 30-min coding windows daily (2 problems each); force one full AC first
7-8 Mixed day: morning MCQ mock, evening coding + re-read values page
9 Light review of DBMS/OOP/Linux flashcards only
10 Sleep, ID, platform dry-run if the invite allows; no new topics

Frequently asked questions

What is the HSBC online assessment pattern?

India Technology campus drives for Trainee Software Engineer / SDE most often report a two-phase CoCubes (AON) paper: Phase 1 is about 70 MCQs in 75 minutes (roughly 20 aptitude, 20 English, 30 technical on DBMS, OOP and OS/Linux), then Phase 2 is 2 coding problems in about 30 minutes. Section counts and cutoffs change by cycle - confirm against your drive mail.

What coding questions does HSBC ask in the OA?

Candidate reports describe 2 easy to easy-moderate problems in around 30 minutes, usually on arrays, strings, hashing and basic logic rather than hard competitive-programming puzzles. Clearing at least one problem with all test cases passing is widely reported as the bar to progress; finishing both helps.

Does HSBC have negative marking in the OA?

Public India Technology write-ups for recent CoCubes drives rarely describe negative marking as the main filter. Pace and sectional coverage matter more than guessing strategy. Always read the instructions on your own paper - platforms and rules can differ by cycle.

What comes after the HSBC coding test?

Most India Technology funnels place an HSBC Values Assessment (situational judgement) after the online assessment, then a technical interview and HR. The Values Assessment is itself an elimination stage, so treat it as a real round, not a soft survey.

Is HSBC OA the same as HireVue or SHL?

No for most India Technology campus reports, which name CoCubes (AON) for MCQs and coding. SHL reasoning tests and HireVue video interviews appear more often on UK and global graduate programmes. Match prep to the platform named in your invite.

Common mistakes that kill HSBC OA scores

  • Spending 10 minutes on one aptitude item and leaving verbal unfinished
  • Opening both coding problems and finishing neither with full tests
  • Treating Values Assessment as a personality quiz with inconsistent choices
  • Practising only untimed LeetCode Hard while skipping 75-minute mixed papers
  • Assuming HireVue prep when the invite clearly names CoCubes
