HPCL hires fresh engineers as Officers through its own Computer Based Test, then a Group Task and a long Personal Interview, with a pre-employment medical at the end. There is no GATE shortlist in the 2021, 2025 or 2026 engineer advertisements. Public, first-hand interview reports for HPCL are much scarcer than for IOCL or BPCL. This page combines the one detailed candidate write-up we found (2021, Electrical) with the stage-by-stage rules in HPCL’s own notices, and says clearly where nothing has been published.
60% overall (54% reserved) and 50% in the technical section, then rank within the shortlist ratio
Document upload
Eligibility proofs uploaded online
Degree, 65% aggregate (55% SC/ST/PwBD), age and category documents that match the application
Group Task
Groups of six or seven reported; format not published
Working with the group, contributing without taking over
Personal Interview
30+ min reported; 9-10 member panel in the 2021 report
Branch fundamentals with a plant angle, honest work history, composure under cross-questioning
Psychometric (some cycles)
Online assessment before or after GT/PI
Consistency with what you said in the interview
Pre-Employment Medical Exam
HPCL-empanelled hospital
HPCL’s published medical standards
Electrical Engineer (E2 grade) - 2021 GT and interview
Electrical Engineer interview experience
Candidate profile: Electrical engineer with about three years in the electrical department of a large steel company, who had resigned before applying. Interview at Petroleum House, Mumbai.
Group Task
About 20 of 23 called candidates attended that day
Split into groups of seven, seven and six
Four candidates in total moved on to the interview
Tip from the author: Work as a team, let others speak, but do not stay silent
Personal Interview (30+ min, 9-10 panel members)
Introduce yourself; then detailed questions on the previous job and why the candidate resigned
How is a substation energised? How many incoming feeder sources are there, and how are they connected?
What does a bus coupler do? What would you do if one source trips while you are charging the line-up?
Difference between earthing and neutral; how neutral and body earth pits differ in construction and recommended resistance
Lightning arresters
An ethics course on the candidate’s resume: how had they applied it at work?
How do you manage stress? The panel asked for recent real examples, not theory
Tip from the author: Do not exaggerate. The panel keeps asking until every member is convinced
Takeaways
What decided it: Of 20 candidates interviewed that day, three were sent for the medical. The author felt the GT and PI mattered whatever your CBT score
Common fail: Answers that do not hold up when a second or third panel member asks the same thing differently
How to practise: Explain one real system you have worked on (a substation, a pump house, a process unit) from incoming supply to protection, out loud and without notes
Mechanical, Chemical and Civil Engineer posts - what is known
Other Engineer posts
Candidate profile: Fresh B.E./B.Tech graduates applying to the Mechanical, Chemical or Civil Engineer posts (Rs 50,000-1,60,000 scale)
What HPCL publishes
Same CBT, Group Task and interview stages as Electrical
Technical questions follow the syllabus HPCL hosts on its careers page for each post
Engineers can be placed in operations, sales, engineering and projects, retail outlet upgradation, operations and distribution, or refinery roles
Posting anywhere in India, shift work possible, assignment to subsidiaries or joint ventures possible
What is not published
We did not find a detailed first-hand interview report for these posts in recent cycles
Prep guides list topics such as centrifugal pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, valves, turbines and thermodynamic cycles for Mechanical, but they do not cite actual candidates, so treat them as a topic list rather than reported questions
Expect the same panel style as the Electrical report: long, with several members cross-checking
Takeaways
What to prepare: Plant-angle answers for your branch: pumps, tanks and surge for Mechanical; desalting, distillation, hydrotreating and lube base oils for Chemical; tank foundations, RCC cover and exposure classes for Civil. Worked answers are on the HPCL hub
Common fail: Preparing only GATE-style numericals and no aptitude, then missing the CBT overall cutoff
Junior Executive (diploma) route
Junior Executive posts
Candidate profile: Diploma holders (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical and others) applying to Junior Executive posts on the Rs 30,000-1,20,000 scale
Process
CBT, then Group Task and/or Personal Interview; HPCL’s notices also mention skill tests for some Junior Executive posts
Junior Executive Civil and Mechanical candidates in the 2025-26 cycle also had a Physical Fitness Efficiency Test (working at height, endurance, agility) after the medical
Maximum age 25 for General candidates in the 2025 and 2026 advertisements
Takeaways
This is a separate post with its own vacancies and pay scale, not a stepping stone to the Engineer post
Sample answers for high-frequency questions
Use these as frames, not scripts.
Technical
Q. How is a substation energised? A. Walk it in order: confirm isolations and earthing switches are removed, check protection relays are healthy, charge the incoming line or transformer from the source side, then close the bus and outgoing feeders one by one while watching voltage and protection. Mention interlocks and permit-to-work at each step.
Q. What would you do if one incoming source trips while charging the line-up? A. Stop further switching, find out why it tripped before reclosing, and if the scheme allows, transfer the dead section to the healthy source through the bus coupler after checking that the healthy source can take the load. Never reclose blindly on a fault.
Q. Difference between neutral and body earthing pits? A. The neutral earth carries system neutral current and fault current from the transformer star point; body earthing connects equipment frames for touch safety. They are kept separate and are tested for low resistance; quote the values your organisation or the applicable standard uses rather than guessing a number.
HR
Q. Why did you leave your last job? A. Give the real reason in two sentences, say what you did in the gap, and make it match your form exactly. Expect follow-ups from several panel members.
Q. How do you manage stress? A. One specific, recent example: what was at stake, what you did first, and how it ended. Avoid general advice about meditation or time management.
